The Fragrance Mistakes You Might Be Making

Spritzing your fragrance before you run out of the door seems like a straight forward task. However, to make the most out of your fragrance and for long lasting wear, there are a few common fragrance mistakes you should avoid:

Shopping for Perfume

Most fragrances are composed of three levels: top, heart and base notes. So, when you’re in-store, judging perfumes on a single spritz you’re only going to smell the top notes.

To fully try a new fragrance before you buy, spritz onto a blotter and then, if you like the smell, spritz onto a pulse point such as your wrist. Leave the scent to settle, without rubbing in, and warm to your body which normally takes 15-20 minutes. This will provide you with a more accurate idea of how the fragrance and its different notes will truly smell on you.

Spend Wisely

Sometimes spending a little extra money can make your fragrance go further. Body mists are designed to last for around 1-2 hours, men’s cologne average 3-4 hours, Eau de Toilette’s 4-5 hours and Eau de Parfum 6-8 hours.

The longest lasting, and also the most expensive, is a Parfum, which can last for up to 16 hours.

If you want to extend how long your fragrance lasts then consider purchasing the ancillary body products, whether that’s a deodorant, shower gel, body lotion or body cream. By layering your fragrance you will deepen the notes and extend how long it lasts by up to 60%.

If your favourite fragrance does not have ancillary body products, or money is tight, then consider using a non-perfumed body lotion as a base layer.

To prolong the fragrance even further, experts also suggest spritzing on your hair and clothes, as well as your skin, but be careful not to overdo it.

Spritz don’t Spray

Overpowering perfume can often work to your disadvantage, as it can make the fragrance too strong and give it the opposite effect. Therefore, a rule to go by is to only apply enough perfume to make it detectable from arm’s length away from you and no further. This normally means just 2-3 short spritz’ rather than long bursts.

Store Well

Fragrances should be kept away from direct sunlight and exposure to extreme heat as this can change their composition. To keep your perfumes and colognes in the best condition, keep them in a shady space, perhaps on a shelf or in your closet.

Long Lasting Application

For a smell that lasts, apply a rich body lotion all over your skin and then lightly spritz your chosen fragrance on top. Perfume also works best when sprayed onto your pulse points, as the molecules interact most effectively when they are in direct contact with your skin. When spritzing onto your wrists, remember to avoid the common ritual of aggressively rubbing them together afterwards, as this will break up the fragrance construction.

Avoiding these five common fragrance mistakes can improve your signature scent shopping decisions and help your chosen fragrance to last longer throughout the day.
